THURSDAY PUZZLE — No, you’re not losing your mind. It’s just Thursday, and there is bound to be an extra twist to the theme. Thursday puzzles require you to be patient until the idea behind the theme comes rushing at you all at once, in that delicious “aha!” moment.

They’re challenging, and they require you to put all of your lateral thinking skills to use — that’s why I love Thursday puzzles more than any other day of the week. I think you’ll like this one by Lewis Rothlein, too.

Just don’t worry if you have a few parts left over. It just means that you are outstanding in your field. And not over the line.

1A: If you have ever wondered why AMANAS appears so often in crossword puzzles, let me reassure you that it’s not product placement. It’s because of that consonant-vowel alternating pattern, which makes filling a puzzle much easier.

7A: Adore alliteration! “Verses versus verses events” is a brilliant clue. The answer is SLAMS, as in poetry slams, where poets see who can spit the best rhymes. I’m sure these took place in Yeats’s time.

17A: Apparently no one passes the art of how to TIE A TIE on to their children anymore. According to this clue, it’s the No. 1 how-to search on Google. But you can sometimes rely on the kindness of strangers:

21A: Special shout out to actress LENA Headey, who played the twisted Cersei Lannister on “Game of Thrones” so brilliantly.

24A: Watch your parsing here. “Calls for reserves?” should be read as “Calls for re-serves,” as in tennis, and the answer is LETS.

3D: “Second person?” is an ALTER EGO, and if you had one, you might refer to him or her in the second person.

10D: I had a vague knowledge of the actress Janet MCTEER, but if you have never heard of her, I’m happy to introduce you.

27D: I fell for this one. I wanted the answer to “Scout leader?” to be some sort of troop leader, and I had forgotten that the Lone Ranger’s sidekick, TONTO, rode a horse named Scout. I guess he leads Scout in the sense that Scout is trained to listen to him or, if he is walking, he could lead Scout by the reins.

58D: If you keep the words KEA and LOA in your head, you have a 50 percent chance of getting “Mauna ___” right every time. In this puzzle, the answer is LOA.

Mr. Rothlein takes the football term, OFFSIDES (38D), and reinterprets it as “Let’s lop OFF the SIDES of these words!”

You might have noticed that the answers to six of the clues in this puzzle don’t really match their clues. For example, you probably thought that the answer to 12A’s “Unassisted” was ALONE, and you would be partially correct. But you need to write BALONEY into the seven letter slot. What’s up with that?

Similarly, we are not about to celebrate our 30th anniversary just yet, but if my partner ever woke me UP EARLY (59A) as a “30th anniversary gift,” he’d be sleeping on the couch for quite a while. I don’t really desire the real answer, but sleep is sacred in my house. Once again, the answer doesn’t make sense.

If we take the first and last letters of these words and remove them (lop OFF the SIDES), however, we wind up with answers that make much more sense (ALONE and PEARL).

I think this was a really nice catch, in that Mr. Rothlein was able to reimagine the revealer as a way to recognize “words inside other words.”Kudos also for debuting the delicious MOCHI (I like mine with ice cream inside), the lively CLUNKED and RODE HERD.

My first iteration of this puzzle was rejected by Will and Sam. They said the idea was creative, but they balked at the reveal (which was SIDESWIPE), rightfully calling it “stretchy.” They also said it would be too tough for solvers because the theme answers were asymmetrical. I replied with a counterproposal: What if, in addition to bringing the theme answers to symmetry, I changed the reveal to OFFSIDES? They said it sounded much better in theory, give it a shot, but no guarantees.

Thus this puzzle was born and tempered, and after a bit of further burnishing under excellent care, may it bring to many a lovely solving experience.

That first iteration was made a year and a half ago, yet just last week I woke up with the thought that SPLIT ENDS might also have worked as a reveal. Or maybe that’s stretchy, too.

Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.

Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
